How to use BMI Calculator

  1. Choose metric (cm and kg) or imperial (feet, inches and pounds).
  2. Enter your height and weight.
  3. Read your BMI, the category under both the WHO and Asian Indian cut-offs, and the healthy weight range for your height.

How BMI is calculated

BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in metres)². Someone 1.75 m tall weighing 70 kg has a BMI of 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.9.

The World Health Organization's adult categories are: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 healthy, 25 to 29.9 overweight, and 30 or more obese. For the same height, the healthy range is 18.5 × height² to 24.9 × height²: about 56.7 kg to 76.3 kg at 1.75 m.

Research shows that South Asian adults face higher health risks at lower BMI values, so Indian consensus guidelines use lower cut-offs: overweight from 23 and obese from 25. The calculator shows both so you can see the difference.

Frequently asked questions

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

No. It does not distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes can score as overweight, and it does not apply to children, teenagers or pregnancy. Waist size and a doctor's assessment give a fuller picture.

Is this medical advice?

No. It is a screening number for adults. Talk to a doctor or a registered dietitian about your weight and health.

Are my details stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
