How to use SIP Calculator
- Enter how much you plan to invest each month, the yearly return you expect and the number of years.
- Optionally add a yearly step-up: the percentage by which you will raise the SIP each year.
- Compare the amount you put in with the estimated value, and check the table for the growth in each year.
How the estimate works
Each instalment is assumed to be invested at the start of the month and to grow at a monthly rate of the yearly return divided by 12. Without a step-up this is the usual formula: value = M × ((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i × (1 + i), with M the monthly amount, i the monthly rate and n the number of months.
A step-up raises the instalment once a year, which is how many people invest as their income grows. Even a 10% step-up changes the final value a lot because the larger, later instalments still have years to compound.
Worked example
₹10,000 a month for 10 years at an assumed 12% a year: you invest ₹12,00,000 and the estimate comes to about ₹23,23,391, a gain of roughly ₹11,23,000.
The same plan with a 10% yearly step-up invests more, about ₹19,12,000, and grows to about ₹33,74,000 at the same assumed return.
Frequently asked questions
Will my SIP really earn 12%?
Nobody can promise that. Market-linked funds rise and fall, and past returns do not guarantee future ones. Use a conservative rate and treat the result as an estimate, not a forecast.
Does this include taxes, expense ratios or exit loads?
No. Enter a return that is already net of the fund's expense ratio if you want a closer estimate, and remember that capital-gains tax applies when you redeem.
What is a step-up SIP?
A SIP whose instalment increases by a fixed percentage every year. It helps your investing keep pace with salary growth and inflation.
