How to use Number to Words Converter

  1. Type the number, with or without commas.
  2. Choose the Indian or international system, and either rupees and paise (for cheques and invoices) or a plain number.
  3. Copy the words with the button below the result.

Indian and international number names

The Indian system groups digits as 12,34,56,789: after the first thousand, every two digits get a new name (lakh = 1,00,000 and crore = 1,00,00,000). The international system groups by threes: 123,456,789, with million = 1,000,000 and billion = 1,000,000,000.

So 1,00,00,000 is one crore in the Indian system and ten million in the international system. Very large Indian amounts are usually said in crore: 1,00,00,00,00,000 is ten thousand crore.

Writing amounts on cheques

Banks expect the amount in words to match the figures exactly. Write it on one line, end with 'only' so nothing can be added, and include paise if the amount has any: ₹12,345.50 becomes 'Twelve thousand three hundred forty-five rupees and fifty paise only'.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no 'and' in 'one hundred five'?

Both 'one hundred five' and 'one hundred and five' are correct. Cheques and invoices in India commonly omit the 'and' between hundreds and tens, so the converter does too.

How large a number can it convert?

Up to 15 digits before the decimal point, which covers amounts in the lakh-crore range, with up to two decimal places.
