How to use Percentage Calculator
- Find the row that matches your question: a percentage of a number, what percent one number is of another, the change between two numbers, or adding a percentage.
- Type your two numbers into that row.
- The answer appears below the row as you type, written out as a sentence.
The four formulas
X% of Y = X ÷ 100 × Y. For example, 15% of 200 = 0.15 × 200 = 30.
X is what percent of Y = X ÷ Y × 100. For example, 30 out of 120 = 30 ÷ 120 × 100 = 25%.
Percentage change from A to B = (B − A) ÷ A × 100. A price that goes from ₹80 to ₹100 rose by 25%. Going back from ₹100 to ₹80 is a fall of 20%, not 25%, because the starting value is different.
Adding X% to Y = Y × (1 + X ÷ 100), and removing it = Y × (1 − X ÷ 100). A ₹500 item with a 10% discount costs 500 × 0.9 = ₹450.
Frequently asked questions
Why is a 20% rise followed by a 20% fall not back to the start?
The fall is taken from the larger number. 100 rises 20% to 120, then falls 20% of 120 (24) to 96.
What is the difference between percent and percentage points?
Going from a 5% rate to a 6% rate is a rise of 1 percentage point, but a 20% increase in the rate itself.
How do I remove GST from a price?
Divide by (1 + rate ÷ 100) rather than subtracting a percentage. The GST Calculator does this for you.
